Michael Buble - Haven't Met You Yet.

The video that I am analysing is "Haven't met you yet" by Michael Buble. The video was directed by Rich Lee and was released on October 1st 2009. It is part of the pop genre, and spent many weeks in the contemporary chart at number 1. It follows the characteristics of the pop genre because it is a has elements of both performance and narrative styles of a music video. It follows Michael in a supermarket as meets a blonde woman by a fridge and they begin dancing and then all of the customers and staff follow out into the car park where there is confetti and a lot of dancing. It then suddenly cuts back to Michael at the till being given a receipt and it seems as it was all a dream until the woman from the dream walks in the door, and Michael walks out confused.

There are many examples during the video of when the lyrics are matched with the visuals. For example the song begins with Michael singing about how he has had his heart broken and how things do not work out for him and at this point he is walking around the shop on his own. When the lyrics change to "and some day I know it will all turn out", the blonde woman appears, as if she is a miracle almost. From then on the song is upbeat and faster paced. The video is rather abstract in some places, as when the lyrics begin to form a promise to the lover such as "I might have to wait, i'll never give up" the blonde woman and him are floating on a table for two over the top isle of the supermarket. This shows that the promises he is making are romantice, hence the table for two. Another main example is during the instrumental there is a live band in the supermarket. My final example is during the bridge of the song, when the speed suddenly decreases, and the dancing then goes into slow motion, yet the action between Michael and the love interest is still at normal speed. The video does show examples of cutting to the beat. At the beginning on average it cuts every octave, yet as the song progresses it changes to every four beats. It cuts quite fast throughout the video and changes and speeds up particularly in the chorus.

There are many instances where there are close up's of Michael, and these continue throughout as he is narrating the story because he is the one who is daydreaming. These do fade slightly as there becomes more cutaways to the other dancing and people within the supermarket. The company is looking to sell this track by showing him as an attractive young man, and also by featuring his real life fiance it could attract those fans who are intrigued as to what she actually looks like. It also sells his music as it is an upbeat song which goes with the narrative of having a band and confetti and it is alll very fairytale like. It is different to other Buble videos, as many of them are performance based i.e. Crazy and Cry Me A River. His first few videos were also very mellow and slow, and this one breaks the conventions of those. It doesn't represent a change of image, it merely shows a progression in a star.

The artist is not on sexual display as the video tells a sort of love story. The main characters are however both very attractive people, and this could help to sell the video. There is a shot at the start of the video where Michael and the blonde woman are on the top of an isle in the shop where they have just embraced and there is a shot of their lower bodies meeting closely, which could be implied as a sexual image, however it does just show them holding each other. This has been chosen merely to show the relationship between them in my mind.

The video relates to the stars real life as he recently got engaged and therefore wrote the song for his fiance, who he chose to feature in the video. The song talks about his perfect love, and this shows that he has found her in real life.
